Resource Information
1. Shipping Rates

- We only ship within the continental United States. (If you wish to ship to a location outside the continental United States please supply the shipping address using our Special Request Form.)

- In most situations, our rocks are shipped via UPS regular ground freight, but we may elect to use standard USPS at our discrection.

- We cannot offer BREAKAGE GUARANTEE with any rock purchases. We will package to minimize breakage but Holey Rocks are somewhat fragile.

- Estimate the basic shipping cost for your rock(s) to be $1.60 per pound in the 48 continguous United States.

- All orders require a $10 special packaging cost per item. This covers the extra packing materials and handling required for these items and is included in your total shipping cost.

- We ship each rock in it's own box and we do NOT NORMALLY combine rocks because they need individual packaging protection.

2. Weight Calculations

- Because of their holey nature these rocks vary greatly in weight for a given size rock, and average around 0.027-0.030 pounds per cubic inch.

- We always include the actual weight in a products details but for estimating rock weight you can use the following guide. Picture the rock encased in a rectangular box that is tight fitting. Measure the "footprint" of that box. For instance, the rock might fit into a box that is 6 inches long, 6 inches tall, and 5 inches wide. Multiply those 3 numbers together and you will get total cubic inches. In this case the total would be 6 x 6 x 5 = 180 cubic inches. Now multiply that 180 number times the pounds per cubic inch number in the above paragraph (we'll use the 0.027) and you will get 180 x 0.027 equals 4.86 pounds. You can round that off to an even 5 pounds for estimating weight.

3. Pricing Information

- Our rocks are priced based on their quality and degree of sales demand, with Grade 1 being the most common and least expensive. This is the grade you will find in most aquarium shops or online stores. They are cleaned but may require attention to small left over debris, and they have the least amount of variety in holes. We price our Grade 1 rocks at approximately $1.20 per pound. (Note: we do not estimate weight but instead each rock is weighed after cleaning on a calibrated digital scale)
- Our Grade 2 rocks are similar to Grade 1 but are cleaned of all debris and "brightened". This does not mean they are pure white in color but that they have had their light colors enhanced and are much cleaner. These rocks are priced at approximately $1.60 per pound.
- Our Grade 3 rocks are similar to Grade 2 but have many more of the "ideal" hole designs (those going completely through the rock). They also have more  areas of pink tinge which is a very desirable characteristic. These are more rare and demand higher prices. We price these rocks at $2.25 per pound.
- Our Decorative rocks are those that have natural shapes resembling other objects. These are often used in artwork and are very rare, thus requiring higher pricing. Our prices for these rocks are usually in the range of $5.00 per pound but the final price depends on the rarity factor and may go higfher. These do not normally have a great deal of hole variety.

4.  Determining How Many Rocks To Use

- Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder when it comes to Texas Holey Rocks. In an aquarium environment some keepers and breeders want the entire tank to be filled with rock. Lights can be installed to create gorgeous patterns of various colors and hues throughout the tank. Others use only a minimum amount of rock simply to maintain proper pH levels. On average, 25-30% of the volume of an aquarium is filled with rock. Any more than that may become a safety hazard due to weight and/or shifting of the rocks.

- In landscaping a different approach is normally taken. Holey Rocks are distributed with larger rocks located at the front of a landscape site and smaller rocks spread out towards the rear. Of course, there are those who prefer to set the scene in the exact reverse order.

- It really just comes down to personal opinion.
